SOLO Taxonomy is a learning theory which outlines the increasing levels of complexity in a child’s learning.
SOLO stands for Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes. As the student learns, they ascend through the stages from:
Pre-structural – when learners are just picking up disconnected, basic ideas.
Uni-structural – learners are beginning to make the most basic, straightforward connections.
Multi-structural – children begin to make multiple connections and can see how concepts can be linked in more than one way.
Relational – students can see ‘the big picture’. They can start to understand how all the concepts they are learning are related.
Extended Abstract – students can now see how the overall picture may link to other ideas in a multi-disciplinary way, perhaps linking concepts or ideas to things they have learnt previously.
